I'm Jackie A., the breeder behind Blackwood Rat Terriers (Standard) located in Groveland, FL. We are a breeder of quality, health tested, family-raised "Standard" Rat Terriers in Central Florida. Our dogs live in our home and are treated as our family members. We do not breed miniature Rat Terriers.

Why did you start breeding?
I am a small hobby/preservation breeder looking to better the breed one litter at a time.
What makes your program special?
I only breed 1-3 litters a year. My litters (puppies) and my adults are all raised in my home, not in kennels. My puppies are very social with fabulous temperaments.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Jackie has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

Jackie partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 8 weeks old.

“I work with each family on what they are looking for in temperament and personality to make the best match possible. I prefer that each family visit in person to make their pick. If a family cannot make it down in person, the next best will be FaceTime or phone call.”

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

We couldn’t be happier with our puppy and our experience with Blackwood Rat Terriers. Jackie was very responsive to our questions, but the best part was meeting all the Rat Terriers in our puppy’s family when we arrived to get him. We loved seeing them all in their everyday setting, playing together in the fresh air and sunshine. Our puppy gets along great with our 2 cats and our other dog. We attribute that to the great early socialization he had at Blackwood and the wonderful Rat Terrier breeding. We will definitely be interested in another puppy from Blackwood Rat Terriers.
