I'm Kathryn D., the breeder behind Starry Night German Shepherd Dogs located in Purcellville, VA. We offer long coat German Shepherd dogs that are bred to be healthy, treasured members of the family. Our dogs are bred for temperament first because we believe that when the child grows up with one of our pups, that experience should be a positive influence on their entire life.

Kathryn has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.
Kathryn partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 7 weeks old.
“We take great care to match the right puppy to each family or owner. We can guarantee prospective buyers the availability of a particular sex and/or coat type. Once a deposit is received, then a representative puppy of that sex and coat type is shown as being "reserved" on Good dog, but actual selection/matching happens after the Volhard Puppy aptitude test at the 7 week birthday, results of vet checks and other assessments of aptitude and temperament. While we try to give buyers the final say on puppies they choose, buyers will only be shown puppies of the sex they selected when deposits were paid. In some instances, the breeder may either be asked to select the puppy for an out of town buyer or may require a particular selection based on experience and understanding the temperaments and stated family lifestyle and performance goals (e.g., aptitude for dog sports) for puppy and family.”

“The price ($3,500) includes health guarantee, AKC reg, lifetime microchip reg, vet certificate, vaccinations, and deworming. Good Dog adds 6.5% fee per puppy and VA sales tax is another 6%. Deposits are only accepted if we both agree that you are a good fit for my pups. Deposits determine order of puppy selection and can be applied to the next litter.”
Kathryn may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Kathryn offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don't hesitate to reach out to Kathryn directly.
When you pay and communicate on Good Dog, you’re covered by Payment Protection.

Puppies in training getting a break to play with their littermates! Canine behaviorist and certified trainer Gabriel Dotson is finishing up training on two pups from this litter with the final two (Ranger and Harper) staggered to finish a week later. Owners receive videos showing the skills being learned and what the correct behavior looks like (what to accept and reward) and how to correct the incorrect behavior. According to Gabe, the two short coats (Roscoe and Harper) are smashing the bells to tell him they want to go out to potty, but the short coats (Ranger and Rocky) took longer to learn the signal. If you are interested in Harper, reach out to me as she may be available!

Hope everyone had a great St. Patrick’s Day! We had some fun with the AI tool and updated take home photos of our customers for them to reflect the luck of the day they became part of the Starry Night family!

Spring has finally sprung! Training has begun for four puppies…only one of which (Harper) is available (possibly). Enjoying outdoor time in the “good soil” pile (lots of great compost), digging, wrestling and chewing mulch (non-treated).

Vet exam went well but the 50 min ride to the reproductive specialist along the country roads in Virginia horse and wine country wasn’t the pleasure for the puppies that it will be when they are older. You would think I was riding in a fire engine racing to a 5 alarm fire with the puppies sounding off! There were no issues requiring a specialist and all puppies were between 10 and 12 pounds! Everyone is microchipped and has their first shots. The training flap door was installed and we already had puppies make their way in and out on day 1! Compare this to my sister’s 2 year old coonhound/boxer/pit mix who stayed during her recovery from shoulder surgery: her dog never got over her dislike of it touching her back. She stayed with me for 2 months and she never went in and out on her own. Not once.

Week 5 is drawing to a close. The puppies have learned to seek shelter when Mom warns that a bird of prey is in range. We are starting to differentiate the stock coats (3?) from the long coats. Puppies have been exposed to new toys, new places, new surfaces, new people and new dogs. Now that the ice is melting, they will likely meet the chickens, goats and possibly the cat this week. Monday the 16th is the vet exam, microchips, vaccinations and deworming. Hopefully updated photos, too! Puppies are all around 10 pounds at this point.

The H litter is 4 weeks old! All puppies are now over 4 pounds, have moved out of the whelping box and into the custom puppy room in the kennel. The puppies have been playing with new teething toys this week…smooth silicone, nubby rubber, knotted rope, and jingle hard balls. They are having their first experiences with the litter box, which is a new floor texture. Nails were trimmed on February 4th.

About Glory
Glory is an incredibly smart girl. She is long and slightly shorter than my other females. Her black face and rich mahogany and black long coat are beautiful. Glory has an amazing personality, always up for adventure, especially if it involves water, hiking and balls. She has excellent ball, food and prey drive, is beautifully put together with a nice structure and gait. Glory is smart and courageous. A clever and persistent problem-solver who is both motivated and loyal. You can watch her work puzzles and beat other dogs to the prize. She is a sweetheart, a photo-bomber and likes to be the center of attention. When you think of dog with an outgoing personality...that's Glory. She is fearless and up for fun and new experiences. Glory LOVES to ride in the car, go for hikes and absolutely loves water, be it splashing in a pool, racing through creeks or the Shenandoah River, being paddled around in a kayak or drinking from and being sprayed down with a garden hose. Glory likes to chase after squirrels, dig for field mice and would love to run down deer, if allowed (but she's not!). She is a heart-stealer and a very dedicated mother to her litters, nursing them beyond 4 weeks if allowed.

About Cassie
Cassie is a gorgeous long coat, red and black GSD. Her nickname is "Jan Brady" because she often wants to be an "only child." She is reserved but courageous. Her long coat is silky with feathers...longer than our other dogs. She has taught all the Starry Night Dogs the joys of fetching balls, so much that it's a competitive sport around the farm. She is the BEST mother we've had at Starry Night, nursing her pups longer and being much more involved with the puppies than previous bitches.

I could not have asked for a better experience! You can tell that these dogs are part of the family and treated so well. I truly believe that Kathryn is the best breeder you could find. She answered every question I had day or night. Kathryn was incredibly helpful and informative throughout the entire process from the very first message to pickup of my new puppy. She went the extra mile and then some to personalize my experience and make it special and exciting. Kathryn even helped me plan a surprise for my wife and was actively involved in the process. Kathryn sent us home with an incredibly detailed book of all information related to Ranger (my new puppy). I’m so grateful to have found starry night GSD’s, and I can’t see myself ever getting a dog from anyone else. Message Kathryn and you will not be disappointed I cannot recommend highly enough and even this post doesn’t do it justice the amount of time and care that went into this process from Kathryn!

We are so glad that we found Kathryn! Every step of the way, she was incredible. She carefully helped us get a puppy that was the right fit for my husband and I based on our lifestyle and the pup’s temperament. Even after we brought our pup home, she continued to be an amazing resource and was always happy to answer any questions I had. It is very hard to find an ethical and responsible breeder, especially with GSDs, and she is one of them and truly cares about the dogs and what kind of homes they go to. We will most certainly be getting another pup from her sometime in the future!
