Meet the breeder

I'm the breeder behind Barbil Schipperkes located in Elizabeth, CO. We're a small, home-based program with a goal to produce a great representation of the Schipperke and continue improving the line. My puppies are produced for quality first, not for quantity. I study each pedigree and have all my dogs are all health tested prior to breeding to ensure exceptional puppies. I look forward to connecting with you!

Barbara’s experience

  • About Barbara

I started with a Rough Collie in obedience and would watch my mentors practice conformation with their longhaired Dachshunds each week. I thought that showing looked like fun, and wanted to learn more. With our mentor's help, we purchased a Basenji to breed and produce our own show prospects. A short time later, we obtained our first Schipperke and have built a fairly successful breeding program since then.

  • What makes Barbara’s program special

Our program is unique because we consistently health test all of our breeding stock and post their results to OFA. We learned early that linebreeding on a quality dog or two is the best way to cement a solid breeding program. We've consistently line-bred, and always choose those dogs carefully. If we find any concerns with one of our breeding stock, we will not produce puppies with them. We love our dogs and what we do, and we strive to make each puppy a great contribution to his or her forever home.

More about Barbara

  • Why Barbara started breeding

Our mentors encouraged us to purchase an adult Basenji from a retired (but very successful) kennel. Following their advice, we bred her and another girl that we obtained from the same kennel. We also purchased a top-ranked male to use for breeding. After a short time, we opted to change to the Schipperke breed. Again, we followed the advice of our mentors as we developed our breeding program. We not only want to continue our show line, but strive to promote responsible breeding to ensure the Schipperke continues to move forward for generations to come.
