I'm the breeder behind Smith River Retrievers located in Reedsport, OR. We work with a pure love attitude. With health and wellness being our number one concern. The goal we set and which I believe is still the most important, is to produce healthy puppies that make a well-rounded character in an adult dog. Sometimes the most ordinary things can be made extraordinary simply by doing them with a Labrador Retriever.
About John
I am a lifelong Labrador lover. I believe they are part of my family. I own Smith River Retrievers with my wife and my grandchildren. We reside on a large ranch near a river so we're able to take our dogs daily 4 runs and swims. Socialization and health of our dogs and pups or a top concern whether they are being placed in new loving homes or staying with us in ours
What makes John’s program special
We care 4 the health and well-being of all of our family first. We feed what we feel is the top of the line feed for our pups and dogs. They receive top-of-the-line vet care and health supplements. As I am retired I am able to spend as much time as I would like which is a lot. My time involves taking my dogs for their daily runs and swims. Also, socialization is key before sending a puppy to their new family.

With tons of pure love mostly. My grandchildren are part owners of Smith River Retrievers so the puppies spend a very large amount of time playing and running up the meadow behind my house with them. On a normal day, I will spend six to eight hours a day between the dogs and time with the puppies. Depending on what family they will be going to I may work with them on chasing a duck wing or learning new commands to help them adjust to their new environments. Possibly a service dog, hunter, or great new family addition. I utilize the following enrichment methods: Potty Training, "No" Biting or Chewing, Potty training, crate training, Puppy Manners, Bird Introduction, Initial House Training, and Fetch.
All of my older dogs are on bravecto and receive annual check-ups with our vet. All puppies receive their first round of shots, first and second warmings, and vet checks before they are allowed to go to their new homes. They also carry full guarantees on their hips and eyes.
Your puppy may come with extra benefits, like a small bag of food or a toy carrying the scent of their littermates. While Smith River Retrievers hasn’t shared specifics yet, we encourage you to reach out directly to learn what thoughtful extras they may include to help your puppy transition comfortably into their new home.
