Meet the breeder

I'm the breeder behind Dragonfly Cardigans located in Brookings, OR. Our goal is to ensure every puppy we sell is in perfect health and form. All of our females live in our home and are intimate parts of our family. The puppies have full access to their mother and receive daily handling and attention. We deliberately expose them to different noises and stimuli such as vacuum cleaners, cars, dogs, cats; they will have been trimmed, probed, washed, wormed, vaccinated; in short, they are ready to join your family from the moment you pick them up.

Q. & A. with Steven

  • Why did you start breeding?

Cardigan corgis are wonderful family and working dogs. I love that the breed standard is a functional working dog. The tails are not docked (euphemism for being cut off) and the ears are not cropped. The pups can be whelped naturally, and pups grow into healthy, athletic dogs with wonderful dispositions. They are highly intelligent, interactive, and biddable. And, because they haven't been subject to as much overbreeding as Pems or German Shepherds, have few inbred health problems. It is my love of the breed that brought me to Kim Shira, with whom I have developed a terrific partnership.
  • What makes your program special?

All of the puppies we breed are exclusively from breedlines developed and maintained by Kim Shira of Coedwig Cardigan Corgis, who has been breeding Cardigans for 50 years. That's 50 years of careful, thoughtful breeding, including all appropriate genetic and physical testing. She has produced dozens of champions and is a Cardigan show judge. All of her pups have wonderful dispositions and are amazing partners in life for anyone who loves dogs. All of our dogs are products of this breeding program. We raise her dogs in our home, with loving, personal attention. They get handled daily and hear all of the sounds of a modern household. They get washed, prodded, trimmed, wormed, held upside down, and ministered to. We deliberately expose them to the sound of a dremel tool (without sanding their nails, clippers are still more efficient until about 3 months). As appropriate for age and immunity, we take them out for rides in the car, expose them to an ever-increasing spectrum of older dogs, cats, and supervised freedom outdoors. These puppies are the very best the breed has to offer and will ready to join your family on day one!
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include brindle and white, red and white, sable and white, blue merle and white, and black and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

I am so satisfied with my puppy, Afon, that I got from Steve at Dragonfly. She has the best temperament and markings. She is the sweetest girl. Steve has been and continues to be the most knowledgeable and helpful when I have questions or just need another point of view. He’s very responsive and cares for his extended family as they grow with their new families. Highly recommend Steve and Dragonfly Corgis.

Steve was an absolute pleasure to work with. He is incredibly responsive and did a great job of answering all of my questions. He is extremely knowledgable about the breed and was able to offer advice on everything from genetic testing to grooming suggestions. On the day of the pickup he had all of the paperwork ready to go and gave detailed information on next steps. My pup from Steve has been extremely well tempered and he clearly did a lot of work making sure she was properly socialized. I absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a cardigan puppy!

Steven was great to work with! He didn’t mind that I had lots of questions and he sent lots of helpful material. We couldn’t be more in love with Tater, who is fully settled in to his home with us. Tater is healthy, happy, and perfect!
