I'm the breeder behind Exeter Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers located in Hudson, WI. I cautiously breed Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers according to directive in the SCWTCA.org Code of Ethics for healthy, well bred dogs with longevity and good temperaments. I do a variety of breed specific testing: Reg CBC, Urine chemistry, DNA, OFA (hips, patella, eyes) before even considering a breeding.

    Longtime dog owner, I moved to the next level of breed involvement, health testing and advocacy, training, and co-breeding in 1992. I participate in performance training and conformation with eye to health having been a co-founder of MN SCWT Health Screen 1992-2017 where we created an awareness of the need for kidney screening in Wheatens; while enlisting the help of Dr. Jody Lulich DVM, Ph.D. U of MN Internal Medicine Vet. School Mpls MN

Enrichment and socialization

I follow the Avidog Transformational Puppy guide for nutrition, handling and socialization activities. ENS, Scent Reaction and APET guides. I utilize the following enrichment methods: Potty Training, "No" Biting or Chewing, Grooming, Biosensor Training, Socialized with Adult Dogs, Sound Stimulation, Socialized with Children, Socialized with Elderly, Household Desensitization, Grooming Desensitization, Touch Desensitization, Toys, e.g. Ball, activity box, Chew, e.g. Bone, Scents, and Structures, e.g. Climbing.

Puppy health practices

Nomograph is taken from mother to evaluate protective antibodies in puppies; Puppies are examined day after birth, 4 days later for tails and another vet check, then vaccines are given as indicated by Nomograph to insure vaccines are actually protective when administered. This means the schedule for your puppy may vary from a 'vets normal schedule' but paying attention to Nomograph is critical.

  • Hip Dysplasia

    Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

    Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Patellar Luxation

    Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Brucellosis, Urinalysis (UA), Standard Veterinary Blood Panel

    A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Adult Paroxysmal Dyskinesia, Microphthalmia Syndrome (PES), Full Embark Panel, DNA Profile, DNA Coat/Trait Panel, Protein-Losing Nephropathy (PLN; NPHS1 Gene Variant), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

    Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
