I'm the breeder behind Hare-Raiser Beagles located in Maurertown, VA. My dogs are bred for health and temperament with a focus on intelligence, trainability, athleticism, conformation, and ability to run a rabbit. My goal is to produce dogs that can compete in conformation shows, agility, and other performance events, while also making wonderful family and hunting companions.
About Jan
I am a veterinarian practicing integrative and holistic medicine for the past 30 years. I've had Beagles since 1999, competing in conformation, agility, obedience, tracking, and field trials. I've competed at the national level in agility. I love to see dogs do what the breed was originally intended. My long term goal is to produce a dual champion (show, field).
What makes Jan’s program special
In addition to breeding for health, temperament, proper structure and type, I am also striving to keep the original purpose of the breed (rabbit hunting).

Jan has been certified by Good Dog's screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you're ready to reach out, feel free to ask any questions about the breed, their program, or specific puppies. You'll also have the chance to share a bit about yourself and what you're looking for in a new companion. Together, you'll choose the puppy that's right for you, stay in touch with regular updates, and plan how to bring your new puppy home.
Puppy prices range from $1,300 - $1,800 and include a refundable deposit of $200.
“The price includes a comprehensive health guarantee, AKC registration, microchip, initial vaccinations and deworming. Any deposits paid will be refunded in full if a suitable puppy is not available.”
Jan may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Jan offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don’t hesitate to reach out to Jan directly.
I perform Early Neurologic Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction between 3-16 days of age. I follow AviDog and Puppy Culture protocols for introducing sounds, edges, surfaces, and people of all ages. Puppies will have been for rides in the car, and visited safe places, gone for walks in the field, have short periods of separation from their littermates. Puppies will be introduced to crates and started on potty training.
All puppies will receive a physical exam, fecal exam(s), multiple deworming, and initial DHPP prior to going to their new homes. I perform a nomograph titer on the dam to determine the ideal time for vaccination of puppies.
We send our puppies home with AKC Registration, Microchipped , and Vaccinations.
Jan offers options to help you easily get your new puppy home.
If you’re nearby, you can visit in person to pick up your pup. If you’re far away, you can travel by car or plane.
“We don't ship our puppies but you can come to our home, or we'd be happy to meet you at a local airport. This option is reserved for those who are looking for a puppy from my program for a specific reason, and the drive to pick up is excessive.”
Why Jan started breeding
My first two beagles were from a reputable breeder and became conformation as well as agility champions. It seemed a natural progression of my passion for dogs.
Jan has been a member of Good Dog for over 4 years

Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Musladin-Leuke Syndrome (MLS), Factor VII Deficiency
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
