Meet the breeder

I'm the breeder behind Hoof and Fang Spanish Mastiffs located in Battle Mountain, NV. We are focused on breeding Spanish Mastiffs who are mentally and physically capable of being effective, nurturing guardian dogs. We are breeders who do everything we can to better the breed and ensure our dogs and puppies are able to get the very most out of life.

Laura’s experience

  • About Laura

I was introduced to the Spanish Mastiff in 2012 and fell in love with the breed. I really wanted to preserve the guardian and nurturing abilities inherent in this breed while creating a more physically fit dog.

  • What makes Laura’s program special

I ask a lot of my dogs. In addition to their guardian duties, they must display stable temperaments under various circumstances, and be able to handle socialization. I expect a certain amount of decision-making and threat assessment skills as this is an important part of a livestock guardians' job. They must pass all health testing, a DNA panel, and hip evaluation through OFA, PennHip, or both.

What's included

Enrichment and socialization

Puppies are taught to walk on a leash, are fully exposed to children of various ages, several livestock species, cats, and small dogs. We also visit the vet and once puppies have received vaccinations, they can make trips to the feed store or other places in town with me. I utilize the following enrichment methods: Socialized with Adult Dogs, Socialized with Cats, Socialized with Children, and Pack Socialization.

Puppy health practices

All puppies are dewormed per my vets protocol from age 2 weeks. Puppies do not go home until after their 10th week so they can receive a full course of 3 vaccinations. Puppies undergo a check-up and receive health certificates before going home.

Extras

We send our puppies home with Microchip, Vaccinations, Certificate of Health, and Food Starter Bag.

More about Laura

  • Why Laura started breeding

After owning my first two Spanish Mastiff puppies, and experiencing their unique personalities and realizing they were fabulous livestock guardians, and family guardians as well, I began to look for other breeders in the US. There were only two, and bloodlines were very limited. My hope was to improve the gene pool here and to breed something closer to the real working dogs in Europe.
