Meet the breeder

I'm the breeder behind Loving Loyal Labs located in Roberts, WI. My name is Whitney, I am a small breeder of Labrador Retrievers. I'm located in the suburbs of the Twin Cities, MN in Roberts, WI. My breeding program is small but continues to grow because of the love and support from my family, friends, previous puppy buyers and potential buyers like you. All my dogs are AKC registered. My lab puppies are raised with love and affection! The puppies are socialized daily with other animals and children of every age to ensure they will fit right into YOUR family. I am committed to and take great pride in raising happy, healthy puppies! Breeding these amazing dogs is enjoyable and rewarding! Nothing means more than positive feedback from the owners of the puppies I've raised.

Q. & A. with Whitney

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have always loved dogs and was excited to establish my breeding program. I have enjoyed the journey and I am a proud breeder with a focus on genetics, pedigree, and structure. I love placing happy, healthy puppies with loving families.
  • What makes your program special?

Our puppies are raised in our home, I am dedicated to raising puppies with as much love and affection as possible, in an effort to provide other families with loving, affectionate, healthy, and happy puppies. I take great pride in my work! My breeding program is small but continues to grow because of the love and support from all of you. Guardian Program: We want to expand our breeding program to meet the demand, however, we remain committed to raising our dogs and puppies in an intimate family environment. In order to achieve the diversity needed for a successful breeding program, Loving Loyal Labs has found that we need to maintain more breeding dogs than we can accommodate living in our home as our pets. Our solution was to reach out to find “guardians” to our breeding dogs. A guardian dog lives with the guardian home as their pet. We retain breeding rights to that dog for a set period of time. Once the dog’s breeding career is completed, they are spayed or neutered and full AKC Registration and ownership is transferred to the Guardian family, and the dog to live the rest of their life as the guardian home’s pet. A Guardian Home is the same as a HOST home. This is NOT a foster program. This is entered into as what is hoped to be a forever situation. We like to think of our Guardians as a partnership, we enjoy the friendships that come from working together. Can anyone become a guardian home? We are committed to maintaining very high standards as to who can own our dogs and how they are treated and cared for. All guardian homes sign a contract that outlines exactly what the terms of the agreement are. Our Guardian Family Program allows us to expand our responsible breeding practice and offers an attractive financial option for the family to have a healthy AKC Registered Labrador Retriever as their forever family companion. How much time will my guardian dog spend away from home? It depends on several factors. We realize guardian families have a tremendous sacrifice to make, given the female breeding dog must be returned to us to be bred, deliver and wean her babies before being returned back to the guardian. Almost all of our dogs/pups available for our Guardian Program will be females, but occasionally we will have a male available. If you house one of our males, we will borrow him here and there for a few days at a time. Probably no more than once or twice a month for a few days at the most. When the Guardian dog is in season, the Guardian Family is required to contact us immediately. An intact female usually has a heat cycle that will last between 14 and 21 days, usually twice a year (roughly every 6 months). During this time, we will need access to her for breeding related appointments. Once she has been bred, she will remain with her Guardian Family until one week before her due date. At that time, the Guardian dog will come back to stay with us for the remainder of her pregnancy, and will be returned once she has whelped, raised and nurtured her puppies and they are fully weaned, approximately 7-8 weeks from whelping. We do encourage your visitation here with us while your "precious girl" is staying with us. What costs are associated with being a guardian? You are responsible for daily care and normal costs associated with owning a dog: food, vitamins, grooming, basic vet bills. We will pay all costs related to genetic or other testing as necessary, reproduction costs; special supplements and reproductive vet bills. Some requirements for becoming a guardian family: *Must live within an hour to an hour and a half of us OR be willing to drive here as needed. *Have a fenced in yard or a means to always have dog safely under control *Have no other intact dogs of the opposite sex in the home. *Guardians must have prior experience raising dogs. *Provide socialization and basic obedience at home or from obedience classes. *Willingness to follow guidelines and recommendations set forth by Loving Loyal Labs pertaining to care and feedings. Maintain the dog at a healthy weight. Healthy puppies come from healthy dogs. *Willingness and availability to make the dog available to Loving Loyal Labs for any testing, mating and any veterinary appointments or needs we feel necessary. *Have a willingness to return the dog to us during breeding and whelping and raising pups at the necessary timing. *Agree to regular health and veterinary care and keep vaccinations current. *Communicate freely with us about the health and condition of the dog. *Take frequent photos and updates of the dog to keep our website up to date *All dogs and pups placed in Guardian Families must be indoor dogs, and never be left outside unattended. *A willingness to allow me to visit your home and be able to visit my home so the dog and I are familiar to one another when the time comes for us to spend time together. *Most importantly… all the love and care and attention possible!! What are the benefits for the guardian family and the dog? *The Guardian family receives a top quality breeding puppy to become a member of their family chosen by us. *At eight weeks of age, a top-quality puppy will be sent home to an approved guardian family. *There is no charge for the puppy. *If guardian family decides to adopt another puppy from us, they get first option of being a guardian of the puppy from their dog’s litter. *The Guardian Family gets to share the joy and excitement of helping to provide loving well socialized pups to our wonderful waiting families! *When the dog is retired from breeding, the dog would be spayed/neutered and full AKC Registration and ownership is transferred to the Guardian family. *After being spayed/neutered, the dog remains with its family to continue his/her life with them *In exchange, the family agrees to follow the conditions as written in the Guardian Family Contract while it is in our breeding program. *Guardian families can take advantage of scheduling trips during the whelping and raising of the puppies without paying for kenneling or dog sitting of their pet. Giving the Guardian Families added piece of mind knowing that the dog is in our loving care during their time away. ^^The selection of an approved Guardian Family is entirely the decision of Loving Loyal Labs and will be determined after discussion and an interview. If you think you would like to be a Guardian Family, please contact us for more information.^^ ** Check with Loving Loyal Labs regarding the Guardian Program current availability**
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Full AKC (breeding registration) is available under certain circumstances, location, etc. Please contact me for pricing and to discuss this further. APPLICATION & WAITLIST DEPOSITS: Fill out & submit the application for consideration of adoption of a puppy from one of my current or future litters. Please be sure to indicate on your application any and all preferences of color/gender combinations. Once I have reviewed your application and it is approved, I will require a $500 waitlist deposit which will then place your name on the waitlist. BUT WHY? The waitlist deposit assures me that you are serious in the investment into the right breeder and that you will not continue to search for another breeder or puppy. I have found that too many people continue to search for a puppy instead of waiting for a litter from a reputable breeder like myself. I end up spending countless hours, days, weeks reaching back out to people on my waitlist that have either moved on, changed their minds, or simply don’t get back to me on their intentions or interest. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH (the minor details that AREN’T so minor): Please also keep in mind that the amount of time to wait for a puppy is dependent on several things; I’m a small breeder and 1st and foremost I’m at the mercy of Mother Nature and the timing of my girls’ heat cycles, 2nd being the demand and length of my waitlist, which can vary based on overall demand and sometimes demand for a specific color or sex or both and 3rd - success of the breeding. Additionally - a dog’s gestation is 58-63 days depending on timing of their ovulation (I won’t bore you with all of those details), then the puppy spends his/her first 7-8 weeks with us. This puts the lead time to take a puppy HOME at any given time of roughly 4 months IF the litter has been planned AND bred (maybe less time depending on where in the gestation timeline the litter is at) and obviously more if it has only been planned and NOT bred. I will try my best to keep approximate dates for when I expect my girls’ to go into season as well. SELECTION DEPOSITS: Once I have confirmation of a pregnancy for a litter that matches your color/gender preferences; I will contact families in the order that the waitlist deposit was secured. I will take a set number of “selection” deposits for each expected color/gender combo (this number will vary depending on the colors expected from that particular breeding). The deposit to secure your place in line for pick from the litter will be an additional $300, for a total deposit of $800 ($500 waitlist deposit + $300 selection deposit). The full deposit will go towards the final price of the puppy. After the litter is born and I know what I have for colors/genders I will continue to contact families in the order that the waitlist deposits were secured. The waitlist deposit AND the selection deposit are NON-REFUNDABLE** and will require a signed contract agreement to move forward with the process. **Certain circumstances, at the breeder’s discretion only, will warrant a refund such as but not limited to; the buyer’s color and gender combination is NOT produced in the litter. If that happens, the buyer will be able to Option 1- chose to move their deposit to another color & gender combination in that litter IF there is availability, Option 2- transfer the deposit to another (future) litter, or Option 3 - receive a refund. Once the full deposit of $800 is secured, it is non-refundable should the buyer change their mind or back out for ANY reason. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Selection dates will be determined by the breeder and will be arranged for the weekend at or around the age of 6 weeks old. Selection dates and times will be set once the litter is on the ground. I will notify you of the date and time I have reserved for your family once the puppies have turned 2 weeks of age. I do it this way as it is very difficult to coordinate my schedule with 8-12 families in the proper order to ensure a smooth selection process. Go Home dates (8-9 weeks of age) will be set up in a similar manner. *breeder reserves the right to first pick of the litter*.”

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Loving Loyal Labs reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Dilute Retrievers.

  • Hip Dysplasia (Preliminary), Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia (Preliminary), Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (HNPK), PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Retinal Dysplasia/Oculoskeletal Dysplasia 1 (RD OSD), Skeletal Dysplasia (SD2)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
