Nate’s experience

  • About Nate

My name is Nate Harves. I have been involved in working dogs for over 25 years. I handle and train dogs regularly. I have bred under “von den Sportwaffen “ since 1999. I am a well respected helper/decoy and am a Training Director for two training clubs. I am a former police K9 handler. I have authored multiple k9 publications and regularly instruct at K9 conferences around the country.

  • What makes Nate’s program special

Our breeding program focuses on genetics and not popular trends or ego driven goals. We are very knowledgeable and experienced and carefully plan our breedings out multiple generations. Our current litters are linebred on dogs from our program. We have over half of our program are dogs bearing our kennel name and we regularly bring in outside blood to prevent bottle-necking our genetics.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Sportwaffen K9 reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Spine (OFA, FCI), Dentition, Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Profile, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
